Singular They….Now There’s An Idea!

As part of their ongoing series on language, The Baltimore Sun editor John E. McIntyre tells you why you should forget everything your teacher taught you when it comes to gender-neutral pronouns. I like the idea of this for everyday life. The his/her thing is so clunky. Honestly, who even uses that his/her construction in conversation? But, in school, it’s a whole other ballgame. We are still forced to teach this stuff–well some of if, anyway–largely because we need to prep students for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT exams. Plus, I don’t know how employers would feel about it. Some of them can get pretty persnickety when it comes to grammar for resumes and cover letters.
